BATTERY INFORMATION

What does CCA mean?

CCA is a rating used in the battery industry to define a battery's ability to start an engine in cold temperatures. The rating refers to the number of amps a 12-volt battery can deliver at 0°F for 30 seconds while maintaining a voltage of at least 1.2 volts per cell. Cranking Amps or CA refers to the same load but is measured at 32°F.

What is the difference between a staring battery and a deep cycle battery?

A starting battery is designed to deliver a large starting current for a short amount of times. Starting batteries are typically designed using a lot of thin plates to allow more surface area resulting the battery being able to deliver a higher current for a short burst. A deep cycle battery is designed to deliver sustained power over a long period of time. A deep cycle battery is typically designed with fewer, thicker plates and is able to be discharged at a greater depth and still be able to be recharged.

Does setting a battery on concrete cause the battery to discharge?

No. Older batteries were manufactured using a porous case that would allow the battery to discharge from sitting on concrete. Modern batteries are manufactured using a plastic or hard rubber case which prevents electrical activity between the cells in the battery and the moisture from concrete. Batteries do naturally self-discharge over time, however, this is a natural internal process and is not the result of what type of surface the battery is sitting on.

Can a lead acid battery be recycled?

Yes. One major advantage of a lead acid battery versus other battery chemistries is that it is nearly 100% recyclable. The batteries are sent to smelter where the various components of the battery are recycled or re-purposed. Wholesale Batteries is able to recycle batteries while offering money in return.

How do I know which battery group size fits my vehicle?

The group size or BCI group size refers to the physical dimensions, terminal type and location that are required for your particular vehicle. While your vehicle owner's manual will tell you the correct group size, Wholesale Batteries has a range of tools to help you identify the correct battery for your vehicle. Give us a call today to determine what battery fits your vehicle.

What causes battery failure?

Positive grid corrosion. While this is a natural occurrence over time, there are several contributing factors that can accelerate this process. Hot temperatures, overcharging, and excessive vibration are a few examples that can result in positive grid corrosion. Limiting the depth of discharge, reducing the cycle count, operating at a moderate temperature and controlling overcharge are preventive measures to limit corrosion.

Can you ship flooded (wet) cell batteries using FedEx Ground Shipping? NO. Due to most shipping companies designating flooded batteries as hazardous commodities, standard ground shipping is not allowed. In order to ship flooded batteries, they must be sent with LTL/Freight Shipping.
